In June of 2004, Sean met Katlyn and both of their lives changed forever. Both were working at the Kananaskis Country Golf Course when they were introduced at a friend's birthday celebration taking place in Woody's Pub. As the night went on the two had migrated to their own table to chat about everything from junior hockey to life growing up in similar mid sized cities. The conversation probably lasted a little too late, and spanned a few too many drinks as both had to work bright and early the next morning, but they both knew they had stumbled upon a pretty good connection. Sean made sure to double check the number of Katlyn's room after dropping her off for the night just to make sure he would be able to find this amazing girl again.
Their relationship would flourish throughout that summer, with Katlyn even dedicating herself to learning the game of golf just to be around Sean more often. Her swing actually looked pretty good, too. As the summer wound down, Katlyn was so enamored with Sean that she decided to take a few of her friends up on the idea of attending the University of Saskatchewan to continue her business degree. The fact that Saskatoon was only two hours away from Sean in Deer Valley was enough reason to jump ship from the land of opportunity to the flat province. She is truly a trailblazer.
The next eight months saw a lot of miles put on the #11 highway, with Katlyn making the majority of the trips to accomodate Sean's senior hockey schedule. It's a good thing Katlyn likes hockey just as much as Sean, or this relationship never would have made it that winter. The Monarchs were at the bottom of the HHL after all.
The next summer the two headed back down the #1 to Kananaskis for four months of work and play. They had a chance to play more golf, hike, camp, and find adventure. Katlyn even got to reunite with her old 4H buddy Jess, whom she recruited to be part of the mowlympics team at Kananaskis. After the summer of 2005 Katlyn transferred from the U of S to the U of R, renting an apartment with Sean across the street from the university.
Sean and Katlyn became best friends, doing nearly everything together. Camping, travelling, hiking, golfing, watching/playing hockey, watching the Pat's and Riders, and even taking a few classes together. Everything they do is made better by doing it together. All of that made Sean realize that he could definitely spend the rest of his life with this girl, even though he had made up his mind about Katlyn in that first summer. After all, she was the girl that he reluctantly stopped watching the NHL Entry Draft to go spend time with, only to arrive at Katlyn's door to find her with the TV angled towards the mirror so she wouldn't miss a minute of the draft while she did her hair. Now that's dedication (even if the Oilers had a poor draft year).
Sean picked out a ring and was planning to ask Katlyn to marry him on their upcoming trip to the mountains. The problem was Sean was so nervous and excited that he couldn't wait. In less than romantic fashion he stashed the ring in the glove box of his Sunfire and told Katlyn to look for it when he picked her up from work. Stories vary, but Katlyn remembers Sean not really asking her for her hand, but instead saying "if you like it we can get married." The delivery might not have been smooth, but the underlying message still made her turn bright red.
Since then the two have purchased their dream starter home in Northwest Regina. They are looking forward to having a bit more space, especially to host viewings of Rider, Oiler, and Hab games, with after parties out on the deck to follow. All will be great so long as the Oilers and Habs don't meet in the Stanley Cup Final.
The two are also expecting a new addition to the family...a beagle puppy named Finnigan (Finn for short). As we write this he is still only a few weeks old so he is still with his parents in Davidson. However, he will be joining Sean and Katlyn early in June. As you can see by the picture, Sean really had no choice but to say yes when Katlyn said "Can we keep him?"
